How to Apply for the UCAELI College Preparatory Experience Program!

Step One:

Important Note: Students must be able to speak, read, write, and understand basic words and short sentences in English before acceptance.

Please complete an online application form for UCAELI. The online application requires a $150 application fee payment with a credit card. If you did not complete this step please go to UConn Marketplace to complete your payment.

Your application will be marked incomplete if you do not pay the fee.

Step Two:

After receiving your application fee, we will begin processing your application. The following student credentials will be generated within 24-72 hours from when the application fee is received. Student credentials will be sent to the email listed on the UCAELI application when it is available. Please see below the student credentials that will be generated for you.

  • Student ID / Peoplesoft Number (7-digit number)
  • Net ID
  • UConn Student Email
  • Placement Exams Information

Important Note for students requesting the I-20 Form ‘Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status’ – Applicants will not be able to complete Step Three & Four until you receive student credentials.

Step Three:

Pay the enrollment deposit for the program. This deposit guarantees your place in the upcoming session. Please note the enrollment deposit is non-refundable. Additionally, applicants will not be issued an I-20 until the enrollment deposit is paid.

The enrollment deposit is $350.00. Please visit the payment store to make a payment. 

Step Four:

The next step is to submit your I-20 request with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).

Please make sure to activate your Net ID and Password before completing the I-20 request.

Visit the Information Technology (IT) website to activate your Net ID and Password.

    In order to receive your I-20 you will need to prepare and submit the following documents:

    Copy of Passport You will need a copy of the full page that contains your biographic information.
    You will also need to submit the passports’ of any dependents coming with you.
    Financial Declaration Form The UConn Financial Declaration Form is available on the ISSS website.
    If you are being funded by a personal sponsor they must complete Part 2: Personal Sponsor Declaration.

    • Student Declaration (Part 1)
      • Degree Level please check off the UCAELI box.
      • Field of Study please indicate UCAELI.
    Proof of Funding The guidelines for funding can be found on the ISSS website
    All funding documents must meet the following criteria
    1. Issued within the past 3 months.
    2. In English.
    3. Bank statements must identify the account holder and the currency.
    4. Funding must be liquid funds such as a savings/banking statement or certificate of deposit. (no investment funds or salary confirmations).

    Step Four:

    Pay the enrollment deposit for the program. This deposit guarantees your place in the upcoming session. Please note the enrollment deposit is non-refundable. Applicants will not receive an I-20 until the enrollment deposit is paid.

    Step Five:

    The U.S government allows schools to issue electronic signatures on the I-20 form and provide digital copies of the form to incoming students. You can print the electronic copy of the I-20 form for use at your visa appointment and for entry to the United States (just be sure to sign your document after printing, and make sure the edition your print has the electronic signature from a Designated School Official at UConn). 

    Please expect the I-20 form to be processed one week after paying the enrollment deposit.

    An immigration officer from ISSS will send a welcome email with pre-arrival information and further instructions on where to download the I-20 form.

    Step Six:

    After receiving your I-20 form, you may apply for your F-1 student visa through your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

    Step Seven:

    Students will receive an official acceptance letter from UCAELI with program start date.

    Step Eight:

    Complete the Placement Exams sent to you by UCAELI. The two exams that need to be completed are:

    • The Oxford English Placement Exam
    • The HuskyCT Writing Exam

    Additional Information:

    I already have a student visa, how do I transfer it to UCAELI?

    To be eligible for the SEVIS transfer, you must be admitted to our English program at the University of Connecticut and receive an acceptance letter.

    Please refer to Step One and complete a UCAELI online application and pay the application fee. Make sure to indicate on your application that you are transferring from another English school.

    Please wait for your student credentials to be generated Step Two and emailed to you before completing a SEVIS Transfer Release Form.

    You will need to submit required documents listed in Step Three to process the I-20 form for UCAELI studies.

    Complete the SEVIS Transfer Release Form from International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).

    I do not need a student visa, what do I do next? 

    If you are a U.S citizen/permanent resident/green card holder you do not need a student visa.
